These saucy cheeseburger sloppy Joes are packed with the classic All-American cheeseburger flavors you crave. Your family will be raving about this quick and easy meal that can be prepared in minutes!
This recipe is based on my cheeseburger meatloaf recipe, combined with the classic homemade sloppy Joe. Don't worry though, if you are a purist who craves the real thing, I have some great write-ups on how to make ridiculous homemade burger patties, or replicate a great fast food burger!
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Lean ground beef - Overly fatty hamburger will make your sloppy Joe mix greasy. I recommend 90/10 ideally.
- Yellow onion - A red onion is a good substitute.
- Kosher salt
- Fresh ground pepper
- Garlic cloves - Garlic powder can be substituted.
- Ketchup
- Yellow mustard
- Worcestershire sauce
- Dill pickles
- Mild cheddar cheese - American cheese slices can be substituted. Don't do anything crazy like try to make these sloppy joes with Velveeta and ignore any sloppy joe recipe that wants you to mix shredded cheese with the meat. Not only will the cheese break apart when leftovers are reheated, but you lose that stretchy cheesy goodness that is so satisfying with each bite.
- Hamburger buns
- Optional - You can make these bacon cheeseburger sloppy Joes by adding a half pound of chopped bacon pieces.
How to make them
To make this easy cheeseburger sloppy Joes recipe, begin by browning the ground beef in a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat with chopped onion, salt, and black pepper.
When nicely browned, drain off excess grease, add the garlic and cook an additional two minutes. Then add the remaining ingredients and mix well to combine.
Serve the meat mixture on hamburger buns, add a slice of cheese, and cover with the top bun.
Storing and Reheating Leftovers
Leftover sloppy Joes can be kept in the refrigerator for up to a week when stored in an airtight container. Reheat the sloppy Joe mixture in the microwave until warm.

Loved your philly cheese steak sloppy joes so I made this today- about four hours after I saw the recipe- and it's delicious. Substituted 1 pound venison for one pound beef but made the rest according to the recipe. Thanks for making recipes with easily accessible, often on-hand ingredients.
